Ponies Run Past Wildcats

The Kellyville Ponies improved to 6-2 on the year with a 53-41 win over the Checotah Wildcats Tuesday evening at home. Checotah got on the scoreboard first with a trey before John Buckley answered at the other end with a 3-pointer for the Ponies. The Cats got another trey before Ryan Marts buried a shot from beyond the arc for the early 6-6 score.
The teams exchanged baskets in the paint as Marts assisted Derek Jackson for the 8-8 score. Defense for both teams picked up as a late trey by Marts gave the Ponies a 11-10 edge at the end of the first quarter.
Kellyville opened the second frame with a basket by jackson. Marts continued to have the hot hand from the perimeter with another 3-pointer as the Ponies pushed the lead to 16-10.
Kellyville slowly pulled away as Jackson and Chance Roth each scored for the 26-17 score at the halftime break.
The Ponies opened the second half with a basket by jackson before the Wildcats hit back-to-back treys to cut the deficit to 28-23. Samy Mack scored before Checotah hit a third straight 3-pointer for the 30-26 score.
C.J. Reinhardt scored off a Jackson assist as Kellyville clung to a 32-28 edge.
The Ponies recorded two more baskets in the third as Mack and Rinehardt each scored with drives to the hole to give the Ponies a 36-30 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Wildcats opened the fourth frame with a pair of 3-pointers to tie the game at 36-36 as the game appeared it would go down to the wire. Rinehardt responded for the Ponies with back-to-back treys as Kellyville led 44-38 midway through the final quarter.
The Ponies defense stepped up with several defensive stops. Jackson converted one of two from the charity stripe before Rinehardt made one of two on the following possession for the 46-38 advantage.
Mack later hit a trey giving Kellyville a double digit lead at 49-38. Kellyville coasted to the victory as Buckley and Mack added late baskets for the 53-41 final score.
Jackson and Mack led the way for Kellyville with 13 points apiece, Rinehardt followed in double figures with 11, Marts nine, Buckley five and Roth two points.
